Fat Loss Tip: Bread Vs. Bagel

Fat Loss Tip: Bread Vs. Bagel

What’s the best bread/bagel option for fat loss?

You’re probably thinking “whole wheat”.

While you’re not wrong — whole wheat is a better choice than white — it’s not the only thing you should be looking at.

First, why is whole wheat better than white for fat loss?

Answer:

Whole wheat and white foods usually have about the calorie content — but white / refined grains are significantly less filling.

This is because the white / refined grains have had their fiber removed.

So although both white and whole wheat bread are about 100 calories per slice, the whole wheat gives you a bigger payoff in satiety.

Cool, so you know to choose whole wheat. But there’s more:

Breads and bagels aren’t created equally.

Consider the two options below:

Option A: 2 slices of whole wheat bread = 200 calories

Option B: 1 bagel = 300 calories

Most people are unaware of this — but bagels tend to be significantly higher in calories than bread.

Why is this?

Well, it’s actually quite simple. Bagels tend to be denser. You’re simply eating more food than you would if you chose the bread.

Bottom line:

When it comes to weight loss, calories are king. One simple way to lower your calorie intake is to switch to bread, instead of bagels. (Note: Exact calories will vary by brand — always check nutrition facts.)
